Work Projects
What kind of work can you do in
NorGhaVo cooperates with a
number of specifically selected projects, which offer a range of workplaces. We
aim at continuity so that each workplace is always manned by one or more
volunteers. Where you are placed depends on your experience, education and
interest. Additionally, your motivation is very important to us. Most projects
are social/society-based, for example in education, childcare or healthcare.
However, there are also other options, like IT.
Below you find a list of our
partner projects. The applicant however cannot apply for 1 specific project,
because aim to serve out partner projects before we can come to meet your
wishes. One can specify which disciplines in work one is attracted to and which
disciplines absolutely not. Based on this information, we can propose to you a
few options of projects that are available for certain periods. We therefore do ask you to have some flexibility regarding
your time of departure and your preferred project.

Our partner projects in Tamale
Nyohini Computer School (www.tamale.nl): In
co-operation with a few ex volunteers, NorGhaVo has started their own computer school. The
school is situated in the Nyohini area, one of the poorer parts of Tamale, from which the
name of the school is derived. At school lessons are given to the group of children for
whom regular ICT-education is too expensive.
A large gap exists between the South and North
of Ghana in terms of computer facilities and the facilities in the South (in cities such
as Accra and Kumasi) are undreamed of in the North. It is of vital importance for the
development of the North that this gap is closed, or at least does not widen even more. By
starting the ICT School that is partly manned by Ghanese co-operators, a humble
contribution has been made.
The main goal of the ICT School is to provide
lessons for the students of the Women's Training Institute, located in the Nyohini
district of Tamale. Efforts are being made to develop a curriculum that especially focuses
on the target group. Also new teaching materials and computers have been arranged. In
time, the school is will expand to an institute where basic training can be given to a
diverse group of people, from schoolchildren and students to teachers and workers.
NorGhaVo is very grateful for the efforts that are put into the school by the earlier
mentioned former volunteer. They form the ICT-commission and co-ordinate the development
of the school. New volunteers will play an important role as teachers at the school.

Tamale Children's Library: In this library in the center of Tamale you will be involved in teaching
courses, organizing activities and teaching children how to read and write.
Dr. Adams Clinic: Volunteers with a medical
background are very welcome at Dr. Adam’s Clinic. The work includes standard
medical examinations, prescription of medication, sexual education, family
planning, the prevention of Aids and advanced medical care. A medical education
and experience are required.
ADD, Centre for Disability: This center
for physically handicapped and the blind can use volunteers to assist in
activities, teaching and administration.
What did you say? Do you have experience with audiology, like hearing aid fitting,
ear mould making, assessing and/or American Sign Language?
Then this project is right for you! The people you will work with are very
motivated. You can work with them for a better care for hearing in the Northern Region of Ghana. All the contacts and network are
clear.
The people at the project School
for the Deaf
will benefit from your knowledge and
experience! And you will have a great time working with them.
Food preparation and
distribution for handicapped people (Dr.
Abdulais Clinic): You prepare food and
distribute it to those people that cannot take care of themselves, like the
(mentally) handicapped or orphans. This is not a full-time job and can be
combined with another project.

Diverse scholen: In a primary school you'll be teaching subjects like reading, writing, English, maths and geography to children ranging in age from 6 to 13. In a Junior or senior secondary school (JSS) you'll be teaching children up to the age of 16, subjects like maths, English or Science. Knowledge and affinity with these subjects are compulsory (if you are teaching, NorGhaVo will give you an information booklet). When you apply, keep in mind when the school holidays in Ghana are (This is referred to on this page).
Nearby Future co-operation: We are currently seeking new partners in northern Ghana who are in need of volunteers and where NorGhaVo can co-operate with. One foundation that is under investigation for new possibilities and that will be visited soon is located in Navrongo and works in different field. You can visit their website at www.dynamisch-navrongo.org, however the website is available in Dutch only. All contacts for possible volunteers are established through normal NorGhaVo procedures for application.
Apprenticeships
NorGhaVo often receives requests for
apprenticeships. The possibility to do so depends on the criteria your institute
of education sets. NorGhaVo doesn't have any formal possibilities for a work
placement, we can't give you on the spot guiding or a final grading. You'll be
seen as a 'normal' volunteer. If you are interested contact your apprenticeship
councillor.
The procedure
On this site (this is
referred to on the application
page) you can sign up as a volunteer.
On this form we ask you to choose 5 work disciplines you prefer and three
disciplines you dislike. When you sign up think of relevant education and
experience. NorGhaVo will judge if you're suitable and whether you will continue
in the procedure. If you have been selected in this first round we would like to
have a conversation about your motivations and expectations (preferably in a
face-to-face interview or through telephone contact; expenses on the account of
the applicant). After this interview we will let you know if you have been
selected to participate within 1 week and then give you also 1 week to consider
the given options. We can't guarantee to honour the project of your choice and
the exact time of departure, but we'll try our very best to do so.

School holidays
If you're thinking about working in a school, you should bear in mind
that not all the months are appropriate to start your project, because of the
Ghanaian school holidays. The holidays will be round and about the next dates:
·
December: two to three weeks round Christmas time;
·
April: four weeks round Easter;
·
August - September: five to six weeks from the beginning of august until
halfway through September.
A Ghanaian School year consists of 3 trimesters. To the best of your stay in Ghana, especially when you're staying for a short while (3 to 4 weeks), it's wise to leave home at the beginning of a trimester. It is wise not to arrive just before a holiday period, because you won't be able to work for the first few weeks.
