Sponsor projects

Introduction
An important goal of NorGhaVo is to contribute to the development of Northern Ghana. Next to practical aid through volunteers, we also give financial support to three donor projects. Below these projects are further explained.

Every year, NorGhaVo donates a certain amount of money to these projects. The sum that is available for donations depends on the number of volunteers that participated in the NorGhaVo program that year and the number and amount of donations by third parties. €50 of the volunteer contribution is directly allocated to these projects, as well as all the money that is donated. At the end of each financial year, the financial status of the organisation will be determined and it will be evaluated whether more finances can be allocated to the donor projects. For an overview of all the donations that have been done until now, please see: donations).

Expenditure and follow-up
NorGhaVo never pays cash money to her sponsor projects, but instead materials will be handed over to the projects and contracters for contruction works are being paid. NorGhaVo will always make sure that all donations will be handed out the sponsor projects. NorGhaVo-Ghana is involved in buying the materials or equipment for the projects so that local prices are paid and the progress of the projects is constantly followed (see also: donations). These follow-ups will also be used to keep the communication optimal, create a basis of reciprocal trust and ensure the continuity of the collaboration. In short, by placing volunteers, frequent visits and workshops we hope to provide the basis of trust and co-operation, necessary for the structural aid our organisation intends to give. For our annual plans and reports we direct you to who are we, where you can download pdf-files (in Dutch only).

1. Adams' Clinic
Health Care in Ghana consists of government hospitals and private clinics. Unfortunately, medical means are mostly very limited and outdated, and the level of medical aid is alarming. Moreover, the costs for medical attention are relatively high. People living in poor conditions will only call for medical help in extreme cases. Most of the times, payment has to be made before treatment is given, creating another obstacle for people.

Doctor Adams, on the other hand, is helping the poor of this region by offering them instant treatment at an affordable price, to be paid after treatment! Dr. Adams operates without financial support from the government, but is still able to keep his clinic operational. At this moment, he is building a completely new hospital. Both the building and fitting-out of the new hospital requires a lot of money! Doctor Adams has started building the first settlement for the hospital as a result of NorGhaVo's investments. The electricity is fitted, tiles are placed and sanitary installed. Furthermore, the entrance is ready to use and therefore the first fase has almost completed. Doctor Adams hopes that this building when ready and furnitured will be able to receive its first patients in 2005.

2. Nyohini Computer School
In co-operation with former volunteer and researcher Ruud van Soelen, NorGhaVo was able to start their own computer school (see also www.tamale.nl). A large gap exists between the South and North of Ghana in terms of ICT, and the facilities in the South (in cities such as Accra and Kumasi ) are undreamed of in the North. It is of vital importance for the development of the North that this gap is closed, or at least does not widen even more. Ruud van Soelen has focussed his research on the wishes and possibilities in this field and has shown how NorGhaVo can play a role. By starting the ICT School that is partly manned by Ghanese co-operators, a humble contribution has been made.

The main goal of the ICT School is to provide lessons for the students of the Women's Training Institute, located in the Nyohini district of Tamale. Efforts are being made to develop a curriculum, improve the teaching material and base trained teachers near the ICT School. Over time, the school has  expanded to an institute where basic training can be given to a diverse group of people, from schoolchildren and students to teachers and workers. NorGhaVo is currently developing a plan to make even more expansion possible and to connect it to the proper financial means. NorGhaVo also supplies volunteers to aid the teachers.

3. School for the Orphans, Needy and Priviliged (SORNEP)
Mr. Desmond Awaafo Mohammed has come forward with the idea of starting a primary school for both orphans and children from a privileged background. His ideology has a found perfect match with the targets of NorGhaVo in terms of mutual understanding and exchange of experiences. NorGhaVo has decided to aid the project, both practically and financially. At the end of 2003 the combined efforts for a development program, a building plan and a financial plan have led to a expedited start. This planning resulted in the actual start for building the school, for which a nice name still has to be found. Currently the work is progressing so fast that personnel is on the way to be recruited and trained for teaching and nursing the children!

Donations
In June 2002, NorGhaVo donated the first amounts to her sponsor projects: an amount of
€ 250,- was donated to both the Adams' Clinic and the orphanage Tamale Children Home. In September a happy doctor Adams received a second donation (€ 2000,-). In December of the same year, some of our co-operators visited the area to see the results of the investment. After this first year and these initial donations the development of our foundation went so fast that we had to create the scheme below to give you clear insight in what we have donated over time.

    * Projects initiated by (ex-)volunteers coordinated by NorGhaVo
** Projects only donated to once (project goals have been reached)
*** These costs have been separately calculated starting in 2004 and constitute coordination and control of

        the donation to sponsorprojects
**** Our foundation is obligated to pay taxes for donations exceeding  € 4.243 (see www.belastingdienst.nl)

In this scheme is clearly visualised that over time the amount of donated money per year has grown. Furthermore, one will notice that the NorGhaVo staf has managed to even save money on organisational expenditures so that both in 2002 as in 2004 more money could be donated as what was calculated based on received donations plus € 50,- times the number of volunteers (see also the figure below). We would like to extent our warmest thanks to both the volunteers and the donating parties, who are responsible for this warm surprise...

Besides, at this moment we co-operate with the Marnix College in Ede (NL). The project there goes on during the school year 2003-2004 and it does not only include the fundraising by several activities but it is also very valuable because of the mutual respect factor and exchange of culture by students in Ede with their Tamalean counterparts. For more information we can forward you to the Marnix College's website: www.marnixcollege.nl (unfortunately this site is only available in the Dutch language!).

Other projects
As one can read in the donations-scheme, a number of other projects are being sponsored through NorGhaVo by initiatives from outside our staff (mainly from former volunteers on the same project, supported by their families and friends). Besides donations to our three main projects (Adams Clinic, SORNEP and Nyohini Computer School), one can make a donation to the following project(s) but only when this has been specified at your bank transfer. Of course you will find more information on this project when you click on its name:
  - Savulugu School for the Deaf.
