Costs
Before you leave
On this page you'll
find everything you need to know about the costs you'll make before you leave
for Ghana. Next to the registration fee to NorGhaVo you should think of a plane
ticket, vaccinations and insurance. Below we will give you a rough summary of
all the standard and variable costs.

Program costs for NorGhaVo
Costs for the NorghaVo
program are €595 for the first three months. Every month you stay on top of
that will cost you €75 extra. We try to keep the program costs as low as
possible. This is partially possible because a contribution to NorGhaVo is on
voluntary basis. NorGhaVo doesn't aim to make a profit, so the registration fee
consists only of the costs that are made and the local salary, which is paid to
the employees in Ghana. It's also important to be aware that a minimum of €50
is reserved for two projects NorGhaVo supports in Tamale (see: sponsor projects).
At the end of every financial year we add the money that is left from reserves
and donations to the €50.
What you get for the
minimal program costs of €595, you can read under menu: volunteers work.
Please note that food, drinks and accommodation are included in the price for
the first three months. To
calculate your total program costs, you have to multiply every extra month
(after the first three months) by €75; you add this amount to the €595
registration fee. This amount needs to be booked into the NorGhaVo account at
least 12 weeks before your departure (giro: 93.97.346 Nijmegen, The
Netherlands).

Standard and variable costs
The standard costs are all the necessary
costs you make, like your plane ticket and (health). Next to that there's a
variable part of your expenses, which is made monthly or weekly and therefore
depends on the length of your stay. Below is a global schedule of the
estimated costs.
(Note:
All the amounts in the schedule below
are based on estimations and experiences of Dutch volunteers and employees of
NorGhaVo who worked in Ghana in the last four and a half years. Take into account that
the high inflation in Ghana leads to variation in prices).

Note
The value of the
Ghanaian Cedi compared to the Euro fluctuates strongly, that's why it's hard
to estimate the exact expenditure. Because of the devaluation of the Cedi
compared to the Euro, life in Ghana for Europeans has become cheaper in the
past. If you don't go crazy with your money, you should stay under the amount
mentioned. The schedule hasn't calculated the costs for souvenirs,
telephone calls to the people at home and extra excursions outside Tamale in
the weekends. As many of our volunteers tend to have such excursions once in a
while and many of them also tend to buy a lot of souvenirs and make many phone
calls, there seems a tendency to exceed the amounts calculated.
The costs
will go up though, when you visit any of Ghana's neighbouring countries.
Because of the stronger CFA Franc (which is used in the neighbouring
countries) the cost of living is considerably higher. Next to that, a visa is
also very expensive (don't forget you need to get a new visa for Ghana before
you leave the country)..
Do not forget to
take along some cash notes of Euros (Dollars or Sterling Pounds) besides the
safely ensured Traveller Cheques (for the first day(s), for in case the banks
are closed or for unexpected casualties).

Redactional
Since November 2003 our program fee had been
stable, which was sometimes hard to guarantee and has led also to some
sacrifices in the past. However, during our
most recent staff meeting NorGhaVo has decided to raise the program fees from
€550,- to €595,-. The reasons for this raise are found in inflation in both
Europe and Ghana. For the latter the third doubling (!!) of the oil prices in
two years time made the decision unavoidable. We did not want to endanger
the donation to the sponsor projects (€ 50,- per volunteer) as well as the
future of the organisation itself and therefore were forced to raise the
application fee effective from 23 April 2005.
